Northwood in located in the northern section of Irvine and is one of the largest neighborhoods in Irvine with over 67 home and condo communities. Located close to the Santa Ana Freeway and Portola Parkway, the neighborhood is easily accessible to surrounding cities. This inviting neighborhood was developed in the early 1970s by the Irvine Company. It is the only neighborhood in Irvine that is not completely governed by a homeowners association. Newer communities, such as Park Place, Woodside and Park Paseo do have homeowners associations.
The neighborhood of Northwood was previously part of the Irvine Ranch. Parcels of the ranch were sold or given as bonuses to ranch foreman by the Irvine family. Many of the parcels of land were held by different owners, and a single developer organized the area and named it Northwood. The Irvine Company also developed Northwood Point in the 1910s as a companion neighborhood to Northwood.
Similar to many of the Irvine villages, Northwood possesses unique hallmarks that add to the area’s natural beauty. Trees that were planted for protection against the Santa Ana winds line the main thoroughfares and neighborhoods. The most popular flora and fauna are the eucalyptus windrows.
